Your phone can stand in for the GPS tracker and put your boat live on the map. The race organiser sets it up for you in a minute and gives you a personal link or QR code.
Tell them your boat or sail number. They create a link for your phone in OptiTrack and show you a QR code, or send you the link.
The page walks you through installing the app, loading your settings and the permissions it needs: location all the time, and no battery saving for the app.
The setup page shows live whether your phone is sending positions and whether its settings are right. A lock test checks it keeps going in your pocket with the screen off.
The organiser picks one with you; all three are free.
A position every few seconds, good enough for dinghies. Set up from the link in one tap; the setup page checks your phone's settings live.
Enter the server and your personal identifier from the setup page (with copy buttons), and choose how often it sends: 5 s for dinghies, 15–30 s for yachts.
If your club's sailing group uses the OptiTrack bot: share your live location
in the group. About one position every 30 s. Type /id in the group to see your tracker id.
Battery: tracking every few seconds for hours drains a phone. Start full, bring a power bank for long races, and keep the app running in the background for the whole race.
Record the race with any app or watch that saves a track (most can export GPX; Garmin FIT and Velocitek SpeedPuck VCC files work too) and upload it afterwards from the race's upload page; ask the organiser for the link. Your boat then appears in the replay and results once they have checked it.
